WELCOME TO THE

Bamboo House is a multidisciplinary art collective founded in 2025 by a group of friends and artists who met at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

The collective takes its name from the historic Fire Island Pines home of artist and legendary hairstylist Paul McGregor, grandfather of Bamboo House artist August West. What began as a collaborative reimagining of the house has since evolved into an ongoing artistic practice, guided by McGregor's creative philosophy, “Follow Your Bliss.”

Bringing together distinct creative disciplines and perspectives, the collective embraces experimentation and collaboration to create work that transcends any single medium. Working primarily with found, salvaged, and discarded materials, Bamboo House explores themes of nostalgia, circularity, and reinvention, giving new form and meaning to objects and spaces with histories of their own.

The Redesign

We each put our lives on pause to move into the Bamboo House for a two month residency. We went room by room creating art, furniture and decor to bring my grandfather’s eclectic style back into the space. At moments it felt like we were collaborating directly with him. Most of my grandfather’s work was created from found objects around the island. In this same spirit, we didn’t buy anything new—sourcing everything second hand, upcycling what was already in the house and even finding items around the island. Our motto was ‘The house is the canvas’ with no material or idea being off limits.
